In what is believed to be the world’s longest ectopic pregnancy, doctors have removed the skeleton of an unborn baby that had been inside a woman for 38 years.
In 1978, 24-year-old Jyoti Kumar from central India became pregnant.
After doctors found that the child was growing outside of her womb, they warned Kumar that her unborn child had little chance of survival.
MailOnline reports that Kumar, terrified at the thought of an operation, sought treatment for the pain at a small clinic. When the pain subsided months later, Kumar was convinced the problem had been treated.
Now, however, 38 years later, Kumar again started to experience constant pain in her stomach. The now-62-year-old woman visited doctors at the NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences in central India.
"It was only after the patient underwent an MRI that we could make out that the mass was in fact a child’s skeleton,” Shah said.
The team of surgeons discovered a mass containing a matured skeleton encapsulated in a calcified set. The mass was found between the uterus, the intestines and the bladder, and was stuck to all of the organs.
