NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Target announced this week it will close its store in the Hickory Hollow area in early 2013 after more than 30 years in that location.

A company spokeswoman told NewsChannel 5 after several years of decreasing sales, the decision was made to close the store on Cane Ridge Road at the end of the business day on February 2nd.

Many shoppers who came to the store Thursday night had not heard the news about the store's pending closure.

"I can't believe. It's heartbreaking," said shopper LaRae Frierson.

The store opened in 1981 and is the last department store left in what was once a thriving Hickory Hollow shopping district. Shoppers said the store will be missed.

"And it's convenient for people that's around here. You know, people walk to Target if they don't have transportation," said shopper Sandra Haliburton.

A mother and daughter walked into the store Thursday night, something they often do.

"My daughter always says can we go to the store with the circle and the dot on it," Angelica Bridges said.

She read about the store closing on Facebook and the news took her by surprise.

"I was pretty shocked because this Target is always busy, especially at Christmas time. We come here on Black Friday, and the line is always around the building and behind the corner, so I was surprised," Bridges said.

The news of Target's closing comes just months after the entire Hickory Hollow Mall closed. It was recently sold for $1 million to a local doctor. Only the Electronic Express store still operates out of the mall location.  Nashville State Community College opened a satellite campus this semester inside the former Dillard's store.

Target said eligible employees at the store on Cane Ridge Road will have the opportunity to transfer to other stores when the location closes in February.

The Hickory Hollow location is one of four the company announced earlier this week it would close. The other stores are in Colorado, Florida and Virginia.
