Local H- “Hackensack”
When I heard Local H had covered my all time favorite Fountains of Wayne song, I stopped what I was doing immediately and had to find it. “Hackensack” has always been such a hauntingly perfect song to me. The sad lyrics of longing for someone and another time that have seemingly passed you by along with such a perfect haunting melody. Somehow, Local H took it up a notch and made the song even more haunting than it already was. Local H, who are the kings of loud boom and bash rock n roll, stripped down to just a guitar for this cover and already 2021 seems a bit brighter for it. Thank you Local H for putting the most unique spin on this song I’ve ever heard.
Ian Browne- “Ghostin”
Watch out Don Henley and Phil Collins, there’s a new drummer in town who is stepping OUT from behind the kit to front his own project. Ian Browne is one of my all time favorite drummers and one of the best drummers in the biz by far. I have to be honest, I had no idea he could even sing until he dropped “Ghostin” and instantly I was blown away not only by his voice but his songwriting skills as well. I’m always a fan of a laid back rock tune with deeper lyrics that may fly over the listener’s heads and Browne seems to be a master of that. I’m not sure if this single will lead to a full length record, but you can 100% add that to my wish list for 2022.
Goof- “Not The One”
One of my favorite new artists that’s shaking up the Chicago scene is Goof. The irony of her name compared to the kinda music she makes is one of my favorite things about her. I love when an artist doesn’t take themselves too seriously and in the end that more than anything proves how serious their music truly is. “Not The One” is my favorite track of her record, “Seasonal Fantasy”. The song to me strikes vibes of Poe meets Jessica Lea Mayfield, wrapped up in a style Goof has made her own. I’m always a fan of an artist who makes the kinda honest music they want to make, and Goof is a true testament to that. 2022 is the year of Goof and I will die on this hill.
Miracle Legion- “So Good” (Live at The Ritz Ballroom NYC 1987)
Every time I see Miracle Legion have dropped a new bandcamp it immediately makes my day 100% better and to be honest it’s becoming one of the things I look most forward to in this crazy world. Growing up it was so hard to find Miracle Legion records and now to constantly get to take a look inside the arsenal of music the boys have hidden away is by far the best part of living in 2021. Their latest addition, “Gladder” is a live concert from 1987 and the band is tighter than ever on this album. The highlight for me though, is hearing an early version of “So Good”, the song that originally got me into Miracle Legion once upon a time. It wasn’t officially released until their major label debut in 1992, so to hear the longer and more raw version from 1987 is such a cool look back at the band’s original vision of the song. Read Southall Band- DLTGYD
Read Southall Band are one of those bands that the second I heard them, I had to immediately hear everything they’ve ever released. The big drums and loud guitars mixed with raw vocals and heavy lyrics is the kind of mix I’m always drawn to and these boys do it well all the while keeping true to themselves. Their latest single, “DLTGYD” gives me vibes of Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown meets Missouri. The heavy hitting song masks almost inspiring lyrics and thus makes you feel like anything is possible without even realizing it. With the touring schedule these boys are on along with the rad songs they’re putting out, NOTHING will be getting The Read Southall Band down anytime soon.
