In addition to being a well-respected musician and winemaker, Maynard James Keenan is also a martial arts enthusiast. The Tool and A Perfect Circle frontman is a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and he talks about his passion for the sport in a video for Revolver.
In the 10-minute clip, Keenan practices his craft at a martial arts academy he co-founded in his hometown of Jerome, Arizona. He also talks about the reasons why he does jiu-jitsu: personal growth and understanding, and — on the off chance he encounters a “drunken, blithering idiot” — self-defense.
Keenan is currently touring the U.S. with A Perfect Circle, which released a new song called “The Doomed” last month. The band is planning to release a new album in 2018.
